Lawrence - A little town with heaps of attitude gets behind local artists. Prior to 1998 for approximately 10 years the local Art Group held an annual exhibition, of their own art, in the St Johns Ambulance Hall which was appreciated mainly by locals. Subsequently a group of enthusiastic women decided to celebrate Gold Dust Year - 1998 - and the 150th celebration of Otago with a Lawrence Summer Arts Festival celebration.
This weekend was very successful with bus loads of people coming from all around the province and further afield. Since 1998 the Festival has been held every year with a group of dedicated people working voluntary to showcase our area depicting all forms of art. The artists are invited and hosted for two days to display, sell and promote their own unique form of art. Incorporated into this event is an art awards which the NZ Art Guild were proud sponsors of. Congratulations to BEST THEME: Marie Reid "Snapshots" The Judge, Kelly Aitken says in her own words: " Bright, fresh, snappy! I can taste the coffee! No question the painting captures the look of Lawrence! BEST LANDSCAPE: Sue Mcphee "Vintage Gold" Comments from Kelly Aitken: The painting radiates a vintage golden glow! Imaginative composition.!! Sue used old newspaper print and historic stories on the background of the painting. She painted a landscape of Gabriels Gully on the canvas , consequently every scene "reflects" - a different angle for the observer.
